In 1997, U.S. courts with juvenile jurisdiction handled nearly 1.8 million delinquency cases. More than half of these cases were handled formally (that is, a petition was filed requesting an adjudication or waiver hearing). In 1997, waivers to criminal court represented less than 1 percent of the formally processed delinquency caseload.
